Porcelain paving has become an increasingly popular choice for modern patios due to its sleek appearance, low maintenance and high durability. Unlike natural stone, porcelain slabs are non-porous, resistant to staining and designed to withstand the elements, making them ideal for outdoor living spaces. Porcelain slabs have a very low absorption rate, which means they require a correct installation system to support adhesion and long-term performance. Using a bonding primer and a suitable jointing compound is essential to prevent tiles from lifting, improve adhesion to the bedding mortar and achieve a clean, professional finish that will stand the test of time.

SikaCeram®-62 bonding primer together with SikaCeram®-621 jointing compound forms a complete system for installing porcelain paving, supporting adhesion beneath the tiles and joints stability once installed.

Tools and Equipment:

  • Mixing bucket
  • Drill and spiral action mixer
  • Brush or roller
  • Spirit level
  • Tape measure
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Safety boots, safety glasses and gloves

Preparation:

Ensure tiles are clean and free from dust.

Add 20kg of powder to 4.4 L of clean water in a mixing bucket. Using a drill and spiral action mixer, mix the product with water for approximately 3 minutes – taking care not to create excess air bubbles during mixing.

The mixed product must be used within 25 minutes. Do not mix more than can be used within this time.

Step 1:

Apply the freshly mixed product at a thickness of 1-2 mm to the underside of the tile using a brush or roller.

Step 2:

Place the tile onto pre-prepared wet bedding mortar and press firmly to support adhesion.

Step 3:

Tap down the tile with a rubber mallet. Check that the tile is level and that the required joint spacing is maintained.

Tools and Equipment:

  • Mixing bucket
  • Drill and spiral action mixer
  • Squeegee
  • Sponge float
  • Stiff brush
  • Soft cloth
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Safety boots, safety glasses and gloves

Preparation:

Ensure the tiled area is fully set, stable and secure before jointing.

The joints must be between 3 – 10 mm wide and at least 15 mm deep.

Clean joints thoroughly to remove dirt, weeds and organic growth.

Pre-wet the tiles but ensure that there is no standing water.

Step 1:

Add 5kg of the product to 0.75 – 0.85 L of clean water in a bucket. Using a drill and spiral action mixer, mix the product with clean water for approximately 3 minutes until smooth – avoid overmixing. Do not add further water to the product once mixed.

The mixed product must be used within 20 minutes so take care to not mix more than can be used in that time.

Step 2:

Pour the compound into the joints immediately after mixing.

Use a squeegee to work the compound across the surface area, ensuring all joints are filled.

Add more product as required.

Step 3:

Allow the compound to harden sufficiently before cleaning. This typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on site conditions.

Step 4:

Remove product residue from the tiled surface using a sponge float with clean water.

For tough areas scrub them with a stiff brush, washing away once the mortar has begun to cure. Take care not to brush over the joints.

Step 5:

Once the compound has set, polish the tiles with a dry, soft cloth to remove any remaining residue.
