Sika offers advanced corrosion inhibitor systems designed to protect reinforced concrete structures from steel reinforcement corrosion and extend their service life. Products such as Sika® FerroGard®-903 and Sika® Margel VPI 580 are proven to control corrosion in concrete structures, delaying its onset and helping preserve the natural appearance and integrity of the concrete. These high-performance systems are suitable for carbonated and chloride-contaminated environments and can significantly reduce maintenance costs over the lifetime of a structure.
Advantages of Sika's Corrosion Inhibitors
- Recommended for new and refurbishment projects
- No need to remove existing sound concrete before application
- No damage to existing structure during installation
- Preserves the natural concrete appearance
- Suitable for all types of concrete structures
- Delays the onset of corrosion and extends the service life of the concrete
- Effective on carbonated and chloride contaminated structures
- Systems are available for surface-applied and embedded installations
Active Corrosion Inhibitors
Active corrosion inhibitors work by chemically bonding to the steel reinforcement surface within the concrete, forming a protective layer that neutralises corrosive agents such as chlorides and moisture. This chemical interaction helps to stop or slow down the corrosion process, protecting the structural integrity of reinforced concrete over time.
Passive Corrosion Inhibitors
Passive corrosion inhibitors protect embedded steel by forming a physical barrier that prevents corrosive substances from reaching the reinforcement. Unlike active inhibitors, which chemically interact with the corrosion process, passive systems focus on blocking the ingress of harmful agents such as water and chlorides. This category includes hydrophobic impregnations, which are surface-applied treatments that reduce water absorption and prevent the penetration of water-dissolved contaminants.
Our Range of Corrosion Inhibitors
Sika® FerroGard®-903+
Sika® FerroGard®-903+ penetrates the concrete and forms an adsorbed protective film on the surface of the steel reinforcement, effectively delaying the onset of corrosion and reducing corrosion rates in both carbonated and chloride-contaminated concrete.
This non-toxic, amino alcohol-based inhibitor is a multifunctional inhibitor which controls the anodic and cathodic reactions, significantly extending the service life of structures and reducing future maintenance needs.
Sika® FerroGard®-903+ is a clear, colourless liquid applied by spray, roller or brush, and does not alter the appearance of fair-faced concrete. It is fully compatible with all Sika concrete repair and protection systems.
