The €5.67 million funding for a new Mortuary and Post-Mortem building at the University Hospital Waterford, translated into a dignified environment for the bereaved and an improved working space for the hospital staff.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
The roof at the new Mortuary and Post-Mortem building required a roofing system that can satisfy the most demanding service life requirements.

Our Solution

Sika Sarnafil® HD a robust single ply system was specified to deliver a longlasting solution for the building that would protect the rooms below, whilst increasing its lifespan.

Designed by award-winning architectural practice, C.J. Falconer & Associates, and having worked with Sika previously, the architect felt confidently that they had specified the perfect product for the job. Main contractor Mythen Construction appointed Sika Approved contractor A.F. Roofing with the installation of the roofing system.

In need of a roofing product to accommodate the elegant landmark structure and withstand the rigours a roof often faces, Sarnafil® HD system was specified. The Sarnafil® HD system combines Sarnafil® G410-18ELF lead grey and the most robust high-density insulation board – Sikatherm® HD – for an incredibly resilient single ply roof.

"C.J. Falconer & Associates seek to specify materials and products on all our projects which are proven to be sustainable, perform in the manner required and compatible with our design intent in each scenario. Having worked with Sika for many years now, we have found that this sentiment is echoed within Sika throughout the range of high-performance systems available, further supported by a knowledgeable technical support team and register of expert system installers. The C.J. Falconer & Associates design intent for the new Mortuary and Post-Mortem building in University Hospital Waterford was approached with a mindful architectural solution, and the intent to create an elegant landmark structure – the Sarnafil® HD System was selected based on the enhanced technical requirements, including both lifespan and performance characteristics, whilst also permitting routine access and maintenance of the general roof area and solar array system installation."

Working under the Covid-19 protocols as essential works in a challenging period, the project was delivered on time and within budget. Upon final inspection, the roof was awarded a 20-year guarantee from Sika, and along with the membrane’s BBA certificate assuring a life expectancy of in excess of 40 years, the client can trust that the building will perform for many years to come.

The Sarnafil HD concept promotes the use of thicker and more robust membranes. Watch the video below to learn more:
