Wind farms play a vital role in shifting towards renewable energy. They help reduce carbon emissions and deliver clean, sustainable power, making them an essential part of modern infrastructure.

As part of Ireland’s renewable energy development, this onshore wind farm project comprises 11 x Vestas V117- 4.2MW turbines, each up to 149.9 metres high, delivering a total installed capacity of 47MW. Once operational, the wind farm will provide clean electricity to thousands of people.

Grouting is a critical part of wind turbine construction, ensuring long-term structural stability throughout the turbine’s operation.

Our Solution

SikaGrout®-9400, ultra-high strength 130 MPa cement-based grout with exceptional fatigue resistance, was chosen. The grout is specifically developed for heavy dynamic loads and critical anchoring applications like wind turbine bases.

Compressive strength and flow tests were completed to ensure product satisfactory before full project application. For this project, the grout was supplied in special equipment with large capacity and applied using a fully automatic large volume mixing and pouring system. This streamlined the process and enabled rapid, high-quality installation.

Grouting was completed across all 11 turbines in just two weeks using 42 tonnes of SikaGrout®-9400, with installation carried out as approval was received from the client.

Application

The application of SikaGrout®-9400 was carried out by our approved applicator GCE Energy, using a bespoke mixing spread consisting of an 850l large pan mixer and 2-inch delivery hose with a stinger outlet.

The grout was poured seamlessly, ensuring consistent quality and flow with minimal manual intervention. Throughout the process, technical support was provided on site to oversee execution and ensure full compliance with specifications.

This approach delivered clear benefits in terms of speed, quality assurance, site safety and labour efficiency.

Project Requirements

This project required a grout that offered ultra-high strength poured to a depth of 600mm in order to resist massive loads that the nacelle transfers into the tower and down into the foundation.

The successful delivery of this project required an experienced specialised applicator, comprehensive technical and on-site support.

42 tonnes of SikaGrout®-9400 was supplied for 11 wind turbines.
