SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
The following conditions regarding substrate quality must be fulfilled or appropriate measures must be taken.
-
Cementitious substrates must be sufficiently cured and dried (between 2 to 6 weeks).
-
Gypsum plaster substrates must have a maximum moisture content of 0.5 %.
-
All substrates must possess structural stability to bear the weight of the new tiling while providing a secure and firm base.
-
Surfaces must be dry and clean, free of loose or friable particles and contaminants such as dust, dirt, oil, wax polish, grease, cement laitance, or efflorescence.
-
When laying tiles on non-absorbent substrates or substrates with limited absorbency, such as existing tiles or painted surfaces, ensure these surfaces are stable, firmly bonded, and securely in place. Afterwards, use suitable degreasing or descaling products to clean the surface thoroughly and completely.
-
For tiling in constantly damp or wet rooms, a suitable Sika® waterproofing product or system must be applied to the substrate before tiling. Contact Sika technical services for more information.
Carry out the following steps to prepare the substrate.
- Prepare substrates mechanically using techniques such as sanding and scraping to remove all traces of any materials that could reduce the product’s adhesion to the substrate.
- Remove all dust, loose and friable material from the application surface with industrial vacuuming equipment.
- Prefill any small surface defects and variations in evenness, profile or around exposed aggregate at least 24 hours before full adhesive application. Use SikaCeram®-204 Rapid to a maximum layer thickness of 10 mm.
- Repair any larger and deeper defects using appropriate mortars from the Sika MonoTop® or Sikafloor® Level range.
- Seal any cracks in the substrate using Sikadur® epoxy resins.
- Lightly roughen smooth surfaces to improve adhesion.
- Prime the substrate as necessary (refer to System structure).
- Pre-wet the substrate if it has not been primed, if it is absorbent, or in hot temperatures. Do not add excessive water - the surface must only be slightly damp to the touch.
- Carry out tests to confirm adequate preparation and adhesion.
MIXING
Do not mix more material than can be used within the pot life.
- Pour the specified quantity of clean water into a suitable mixing container.
- Add the Product.
- Mix using an electric paddle mixer at approx. 600 rpm for approx. 3 minutes.
The mixture is lump-free and homogenous.
APPLICATION
SikaCeram®-204 Rapid is applied using a suitable notched trowel.
- Apply sufficient Product to the prepared substrate at the required adhesive bed thickness. Ensure enough is applied to adequately wet the backs of the tiles.
- Carry out tiling on the freshly applied Product. Note For tiles > 900 cm² (for example 30 × 30 cm), apply the Product to both surfaces.
- Exert enough pressure on the tiles to ensure complete and even contact for optimum adhesion with the Product.
- If a skin forms on the surface of the Product, immediately remove the adhesive layer with a trowel and discard. Then apply a fresh layer of the Product.
- Adjust tiles if required.
- Remove excess Product from the tile face and from between tile joints before it dries.
- Protect from adverse weather conditions, such as high or low (< +5 °C) temperatures, rain, draughts, and direct exposure to sun for at least 24–48 hours from application.
CLEANING OF TOOLS
Clean all tools and application equipment with water immediately after use. Hardened material can only be removed mechanically.
