Refurbishing an existing metal roof can provide a cost-effective alternative to roof replacement, helping to restore waterproofing performance while minimising disruption to building operations. Liquid applied waterproofing systems are particularly well suited to roof refurbishment projects, as they can be applied over existing substrates and around complex roof details, creating a seamless, fully bonded waterproofing layer. Sika's roof refurbishment solutions combine high-performance liquid membranes with specialist joint reinforcement tapes to help protect ageing metal roofs from water ingress and extend their service life.
Sika's Liquid Applied System for Metal Roof Refurbishment
Sika's metal roof refurbishment system is built around Sikalastic®-625 N and Sikalastic®-701, liquid applied polyurethane waterproofing membranes designed for exposed roofing applications. These membranes form a seamless waterproofing layer that adheres to the roof substrate and accommodates the complex details commonly found on metal roofs. As a liquid applied waterproofing solution, the system is straightforward to install, requiring no power sources, noisy drilling or hot works, helping to minimise disruption during application. A key component of the system is Sika® Joint Tape SA, a self-adhesive joint sealing tape designed for reinforcing side laps, end laps, fixings and areas of movement prior to the application of the waterproofing membrane. The use of a dedicated reinforcement tape helps simplify detailing around critical roof junctions while supporting a continuous waterproof seal.
System Features
- Seamless, fully bonded membrane system
- Suitable for metal roof refurbishment projects
- Self-adhesive reinforcement tape for laps, joints and fixings
- Suitable for roofs with complex details and penetrations
System Installation Process
1. Existing roof substrate
The existing metal roof is assessed and prepared for refurbishment.
2. Substrate preparation and priming
The roof surface is cleaned and primed where required to ensure suitable adhesion of the waterproofing system.
3. Joint reinforcement
Sika® Joint Tape SA is applied to side laps, end laps, fixings and movement areas to reinforce critical details and help maintain a continuous waterproof seal.
4. Stripe coat
A stripe coat of Sikalastic®-625 N is applied over the reinforcement tape to encapsulate and protect the reinforced details.
5. First waterproofing coat
The first full coat of Sikalastic®-625 N is applied across the roof surface.
6. Second waterproofing coat
A second coat Sikalastic®-625 N or a coat of Sikalastic®-701 is applied to achieve the specified system thickness and complete the waterproofing installation.
