Construction Roofing Solar Roof Green Roof

Data centres are critical to modern life, but their high energy demands make efficiency and sustainable design increasingly important during the planning and construction of these facilities. With large roof areas and demanding operational requirements, the roof presents an opportunity to improve both the performance and environmental impact of a data centre.

Green roofs and solar roofs may be used to improve thermal performance, manage rainwater, support biodiversity or generate renewable electricity. Combined with a reliable roof waterproofing system, these systems can contribute to more sustainable and resilient data centre design.

Why Roof Design Matters for Data Centres

Data centres require controlled internal environments to protect servers and other critical equipment. The roof specification typically considers factors such as the waterproofing performance, thermal insulation, drainage, structural loading and rooftop equipment.

A roofing system may be designed to:

  • Contribute to the thermal performance of the building and reduce heat gain
  • Generate renewable electricity through solar PV installation
  • Manage and attenuate rainwater
  • Support biodiversity
  • Make effective use of large roof areas
  • Contribute towards specific environmental and sustainability targets

Considering these requirements early in the design process allows the waterproofing, insulation, drainage and other accessories to work together seamlessly as a fully integrated system.

Comparing Sustainable Roof Systems for Data Centres

The most suitable roof system will depend on the priorities and design requirements of the data centre. Green and solar roofs each perform different functions and can also be combined to create a multifunctional roofing solution.

Green Roofs for Data Centres

Green roofs turn unused roof areas into planted environments that can contribute to the thermal performance, reduce heat build-up, retain rainwater and provide habitats for plants and wildlife.

Different green roof systems can be selected according to project requirements. Extensive green roofs provide a lightweight, lower-maintenance option that support grass plants, while intensive green roofs are heavier, including deeper soil, that can accommodate trees and bushes. Biodiverse roofs are designed to create habitats that replicate the environment surrounding the site and thus support local plants and wildlife. Biosolar roofs combine vegetation with photovoltaic panels, allowing biodiversity and renewable energy generation to share the same roof area.

Waterproofing is particularly important beneath a green roof system. Sika green roof build-ups incorporate waterproofing membranes, thermal insulation, protection and drainage layers and vegetation to work together as an integrated roofing solution.

Solar Roofs for Data Centres

SikaRoof® Solar Mount-2 Solar Roof Mounting System

The large flat roofs found on many data centres may be suitable for photovoltaic installations, subject to project-specific design considerations.

Sika solar roofing solutions seamlessly integrate photovoltaic mounting systems with single-ply waterproofing membranes. SikaRoof® Solar Mount-2 (SSM2) is the first solar mounting solution with FM 4478 Approval and is the only solar mounting solution solution that complies with single ply membranes. SSM2 is a lightweight, non-penetrating system made of magnelis steel which is highly resistant to corrosion. Its mounting components are hot-air welded to the roofing membrane, avoiding penetrations through the waterproofing layer.

Solar PV can also be combined with green roof systems, allowing different areas of the roof to support renewable energy generation and biodiversity.

Waterproofing Membranes for Data Centre Roofs

Sarnafil® AT

Whatever additional functions are incorporated into a data centre roof, reliable waterproofing remains fundamental to protecting the building and the critical equipment within it.

Sarnafil® AT is an elastomer-modified FPO roofing membrane developed for mechanically fixed and ballasted flat roof applications. It is hot-air weldable and resistant to UV exposure, wind uplift, impact and root penetration, making it suitable for applications including exposed, ballasted and green roof systems.

Sarnafil® AT is also FM Approved and Cradle to Cradle Certified™, providing additional independently assessed credentials for projects where performance and sustainability are key considerations.

Sarnafil® AT FSH

Sarnafil® AT FSH is a self-healing FPO roofing membrane designed to provide additional protection against accidental damage. A water-reactive polymer within the membrane backing swells when it comes into contact with water, helping to seal limited punctures or cuts and maintain waterproofing performance.

This makes it particularly suited to data centre roofs, where the installation or maintenance of solar panels, HVAC equipment and other rooftop services can increase the risk of membrane damage. It can be used across a range of roof systems, including mechanically fastened, self-adhered, ballasted and green roofs.

Creating a Multifunctional Data Centre Roof

Rather than viewing the roof solely as a means of protecting the building, early planning can create an opportunity to address several project requirements within the same space. Green and solar roofing technologies can be specified individually or combined to support renewable energy generation, biodiversity and long-term roof performance.

Sika's roofing technical team can provide project-specific support relating to system selection, design considerations and specification, helping to develop an integrated roofing solution suited to the requirements of the building.
